Prosaurolophus
PRO-sore-OL-oh-fus /ˌproʊsɔːrˈɒləfəs/
Accepted genus
before Saurolophus ("before the lizard crest")
- pro · Greek · before
- sauros · Greek · lizard
- lophos · Greek · crest
The name means "before Saurolophus". Barnum Brown chose it because he thought this hadrosaur was an earlier, more primitive relative of Saurolophus, which has a similar solid crest. The name combines the Greek "pro" (before) with the genus name Saurolophus ("lizard crest").
