Probactrosaurus
pro-BAK-tro-SORE-us /proʊˌbæktroʊˈsɔːrəs/
Accepted genus
before Bactrosaurus ("before the club lizard")
- pro · Greek · before
- baktron · Greek · staff, club
- sauros · Greek · lizard
The name means "before Bactrosaurus". Rozhdestvensky chose it because he saw this Early Cretaceous plant-eater as an earlier, more primitive relative of the Late Cretaceous hadrosaur Bactrosaurus. Bactrosaurus itself means "club lizard" or "staff lizard", from the Greek "baktron" (staff).
