short-crested lizard
- brachys · Greek · short
- lophos · Greek · crest
- sauros · Greek · lizard
The name combines Greek words for "short", "crest" and "lizard". It refers to the flat, paddle-like bony crest on top of the skull, which is short compared with the tall, hollow crests of many other lambeosaurine-type hadrosaurs. Brachylophosaurus is a duck-billed hadrosaur (a saurolophine) known from very well-preserved specimens, including mummified "Leonardo".
