Propanoplosaurus
PRO-pan-OP-lo-SORE-us /ˌproʊpænˌɒploʊˈsɔːrəs/
Accepted genus
before Panoplosaurus ("before the fully armoured lizard")
- pro · Greek · before
- panoplos · Greek · fully armed, in full armour
- sauros · Greek · lizard
The name means "before Panoplosaurus". It was chosen because this Early Cretaceous armoured dinosaur lived well before the Late Cretaceous nodosaurid Panoplosaurus and was thought to be related to it. The type and only known specimen is a hatchling nodosaurid, and the type species is P. marylandicus, named for Maryland.
