Accepted genus

titan horned face

  • Titan · Greek · titan, a giant
  • keras · Greek · horn
  • ops · Greek · face

The name combines the Greek words for "titan", "horn" and "face". It was chosen for the animal's very large size, since it was one of the biggest known ceratopsids, and for its horned face. The type species is Titanoceratops ouranos, and "ouranos" refers to the Greek sky god Uranus, father of the Titans.

A large ceratopsid (a chasmosaurine). It was based on a specimen first described in 1941 as Pentaceratops. Some researchers have argued that it is a large, old individual of Pentaceratops, so its validity is debated.
