Xenoceratops
ZEN-oh-SERR-uh-tops /ˌzɛnoʊˈsɛrətɒps/
Accepted genus
alien horned face
- xenos · Greek · alien, stranger, foreign
- keras · Greek · horn
- ops · Greek · face
The name combines the Greek "xenos" (alien, stranger or foreign) with "ceratops" (horned face). It was chosen to mean "alien horned face", reflecting the unusual look of this ceratopsid and the fact that it was an unexpected, little-known form from an interval of the Late Cretaceous in which few horned dinosaurs were then known. The species name, foremostensis, refers to the Foremost Formation where it was found.
