The name combines "Tochi" with the Greek "sauros", meaning lizard. I am not certain what "Tochi" refers to, so I have not stated its origin. The genus was named for a small theropod from the Late Cretaceous of Mongolia, with the type species Tochisaurus nedegoapeferima.

The name was published for a small theropod known from fragmentary remains, mainly a foot bone. Its exact classification has been debated, and it has been compared with other small Mongolian theropods such as Elmisaurus. I am not fully sure of its current status, so treat the taxonomic details with caution.
