Secernosaurus
seh-SER-no-SORE-us /seˌsɜrnoˈsɔːrəs/
Accepted genus
separated lizard
- secernere · Latin · to separate
- sauros · Greek · lizard
The name combines the Latin "secernere" (to separate) with the Greek "sauros" (lizard). Brett-Surman chose it because this South American hadrosaurid was separated, geographically, from the hadrosaurs of the northern continents. Its discovery showed that duck-billed dinosaurs had reached the southern landmass.
