SEG-ih-SORE-us /ˌsɛɡɪˈsɔːrəs/
Accepted genus
lizard of Segi Canyon
- Segi (Tségi) · Navajo · canyon, rocky gorge (Segi Canyon)
- sauros · Greek · lizard
Segisaurus was named after Segi Canyon (Tsegi Canyon) in northern Arizona, where the only known skeleton was found. "Segi" comes from the Navajo word for a canyon or rocky gorge, and it is combined with the Greek word for lizard. The name therefore marks the place of discovery.
