Segnosaurus
SEG-no-SORE-us /ˌsɛɡnoʊˈsɔːrəs/
Accepted genus
slow lizard
- segnis · Latin · slow, slothful
- sauros · Greek · lizard
The name combines the Latin "segnis" (slow) with the Greek "sauros" (lizard). It was chosen because the animal was thought to have been a slow-moving, sluggish creature, based on its robust hind limb anatomy. The fossils come from Mongolia and it is the namesake of the Segnosauria, an old name for the therizinosaurs.
