- Gilmore · Surname (Latinised) · Charles Whitney Gilmore, American paleontologist
- sauros · Greek · lizard
The name honours the American paleontologist Charles Whitney Gilmore, who first described the Inner Mongolian fossils in 1933 under the name Mandschurosaurus mongoliensis. When Brett-Surman later decided the species deserved its own genus, he combined Gilmore's name with the Greek word for lizard.

A hadrosauroid (basal duck-billed dinosaur). The type species is G. mongoliensis, originally named Mandschurosaurus mongoliensis by Gilmore in 1933. Its validity and relationship to Bactrosaurus, and the exact age of the Iren Dabasu Formation, have been debated. I left the geologic stages blank because the dating is uncertain.
