The first part comes from the Sesotho word "sefapano", meaning "cross". The second part is the Greek "sauros", meaning "lizard". The name was given to a sauropodomorph known from the Zastron area of South Africa. The type species, S. zastronensis, is named after the town of Zastron.

A valid genus of early sauropodomorph (a close relative of true sauropods). It is known from limited material, and the exact age of the Elliot Formation beds is debated. I am not certain what feature the "cross" refers to, so I have left that out.
