Xinjiangtitan
shin-jee-ANG-TIE-tan /ʃɪnˌdʒiˌæŋˈtaɪtæn/
Accepted genus
Xinjiang giant (Xinjiang titan)
- Xinjiang · Chinese (place name) · the Xinjiang region of northwestern China
- Titan · Greek · giant, one of the Titans of Greek myth
The name combines Xinjiang, the northwestern Chinese region where the fossil was found, with the Greek "Titan", the giant gods of Greek myth. It refers to the animal's huge size: it was a very long-necked sauropod, and its neck alone was around 15 metres long. The type species is X. shenmi, and "shenmi" means "mysterious" in Chinese.
