Baurutitan
BOW-roo-TIE-tan /ˌbaʊruːˈtaɪtæn/
Accepted genus
Bauru titan
- Bauru · Portuguese (place name) · the Bauru Group (Bauru Basin), the rock sequence in Brazil where it was found, named after the Bauru region of São Paulo
- titan · Greek · a giant, one of the Titans of Greek myth
The name combines "Bauru", for the Bauru Group, the Cretaceous rock sequence in Brazil that yielded the fossils, with the Greek "titan", meaning a giant. It refers to a large titanosaurian sauropod from that group. The only species, Baurutitan britoi, honours the Brazilian paleontologist Ignacio Brito.
