Sonidosaurus

SOH-nid-oh-SORE-us /ˌsoʊnɪdoʊˈsɔːrəs/

Accepted genus

Sonid lizard

  • Sonid · Mongolian (place name) · Sonid, the Sonid Banner area of Inner Mongolia where the fossil was found
  • sauros · Greek · lizard

The name combines Sonid, the area of Inner Mongolia (the Sonid Banner region) where the fossils were found, with the Greek word for "lizard". It therefore means "Sonid lizard". The only named species, S. saihangaobiensis, is named after Saihangaobi, the locality where it was found.

A sauropod known from fairly incomplete remains. Its exact position within Sauropoda (probably a titanosauriform) is uncertain. The precise age of the Iren Dabasu Formation is debated, so I have left the stages blank.
