The name combines the Greek words for "roof" and "tail". It refers to the unusual tail weapon, formed from several pairs of flat, fused bony plates (osteoderms) that made a broad, frond-like structure. The type species, S. elengassen, is named after a creature from Tehuelche (Aonikenk) mythology that is covered in armor.
