YOO-tie-RAN-us /ˌjuːtaɪˈrænəs/
Accepted genus
feathered tyrant
- yu · Mandarin Chinese · feather(ed)
- tyrannus · Latin · tyrant
The name combines the Mandarin Chinese word "yu", meaning feathered, with the Latin "tyrannus", meaning tyrant. It was chosen because Yutyrannus is a large tyrannosauroid whose fossils preserve long filamentous feather-like structures. It is the largest known dinosaur with direct fossil evidence of feathers.
