Paralititan
pa-RAL-ih-TIE-tan /pəˌrælɪˈtaɪtæn/
Accepted genus
tidal giant
- paralios · Greek · near the sea, by the sea (tidal)
- titan · Greek · giant (Titan, a mythological giant)
The name combines the Greek "paralios", meaning "by the sea" or "tidal", with "Titan", the giant gods of Greek myth. It refers to the fact that the fossils were found in what were once tidal flat/mangrove coastal deposits, and to the animal's enormous size as a giant sauropod. The type species is Paralititan stromeri, honoring German paleontologist Ernst Stromer.
