Pararhabdodon

PAH-rah-RAB-doh-don /ˌpɑːrəˌræbdoʊˈdɒn/

Accepted genus

near Rhabdodon ("beside the rod tooth")

  • para · Greek · near, beside
  • rhabdos · Greek · rod, stripe
  • odon · Greek · tooth

The name means "near Rhabdodon". It was chosen because the first fossils, a few skull and limb bones, were thought to resemble the European ornithopod Rhabdodon. Rhabdodon itself means "rod tooth" or "fluted tooth". Pararhabdodon was later recognised as a lambeosaurine (crested) hadrosaur, not a close relative of Rhabdodon.

A lambeosaurine hadrosaur from the Late Cretaceous of the Iberian region of Europe. The type species is P. isonense. Its relationships have been debated. Some researchers have suggested that other Tremp Basin material, such as Koutalisaurus, belongs to the same animal. I'm less sure of the exact details of that synonymy.
