Kosmoceratops
KOZ-moh-SERR-uh-tops /ˌkɒzməˈsɛrətɒps/
Accepted genus
ornate horned face
- kosmos · Greek · ornament, adornment, ornate
- keras · Greek · horn
- ops · Greek · face
The name combines Greek words for "ornate" or "adorned" and "horned face". It refers to the elaborate skull ornamentation of this ceratopsid, which had 15 horns or horn-like structures: one over the nose, one above each eye, and a row of curved horns along the back of the frill. The species name, richardsoni, honours Scott Richardson, who found the original specimen.
