Accepted genus
Gypsy (Romani) lizard
- Atsinganos / Atsinganoi · Byzantine Greek · Romani (Gypsy) people
- sauros · Greek · lizard
The name combines the Byzantine Greek word "Atsinganoi", an old term for the Romani (Gypsy) people, with the Greek word for lizard. It was chosen as a nod to the Romani, a nomadic people traditionally linked with Provence in southern France, where the fossils were found. The type species is Atsinganosaurus velauciensis, named for the town of Velaux.
