Bagualosaurus
bah-GWAH-lo-SORE-us /bɑˌɡwɑloˈsɔːrəs/
Accepted genus
bagual (wild horse) lizard
- bagual · Brazilian Portuguese (gaucho) · wild, untamed horse; also 'excellent'
- sauros · Greek · lizard
The name combines "bagual", a word from southern Brazilian gaucho culture for a wild, untamed horse (also used colloquially to mean something excellent or impressive), with the Greek word for lizard. It was chosen as a nod to the local gaucho culture of Rio Grande do Sul, where the fossil was found. The type species is Bagualosaurus agudoensis, named after the municipality of Agudo.
