Austroposeidon
AW-stroh-poh-SY-dun /ˌɔːstroʊpoʊˈsaɪdən/
Accepted genus
southern Poseidon
- austro- · Latin · southern
- Poseidon · Greek · Greek god of the sea and earthquakes
The name combines the Latin "austro-" (southern) with Poseidon, the Greek god of the sea and earthquakes. It echoes the earlier North American sauropod Sauroposeidon, and "southern" points to the fact that Austroposeidon was found in South America. The type species is Austroposeidon magnificus, a large long-necked titanosaur.
