Abydos lizard
- Abydos · Greek (from Egyptian place name) · Abydos, ancient Egyptian city associated with the burial of Osiris's head
- sauros · Greek · lizard
The name refers to Abydos, the ancient Egyptian city where, according to myth, the head of the god Osiris was buried. It was chosen because Abydosaurus is one of the few sauropods known from well-preserved skulls, and the myth ties in with the importance of the head. The Greek word for lizard was added as the usual dinosaur ending.
