AF-roh-MY-mus /ˌæfrəˈmaɪməs/
Accepted genus
African mimic
- Afro- · Latin (from Africa) · African / Africa
- mimos · Greek · mimic
The name combines "Afro-", for Africa, with the Greek "mimos", meaning "mimic". It follows the naming tradition of ornithomimosaurs ("bird mimic" dinosaurs) such as Ornithomimus and Struthiomimus. It marks Afromimus as an African member of that group. The type species is Afromimus tenerensis, named after the Ténéré desert region of Niger.
