Thanatotheristes
than-AT-oh-THERR-iss-teez /θəˌnætəˈθɛrɪstiːz/
Accepted genus
reaper of death
- Thanatos · Greek · death
- theristes · Greek · reaper
The name combines the Greek "Thanatos" (death) with "theristes" (reaper or harvester), giving "reaper of death". It was chosen as a reference to the Grim Reaper and to the harvesting of crops on the farmland of southern Alberta, where the fossil was found. The type species, T. degrootorum, honors the DeGroot family, who found the fossil on their land.
