- Thanos · Greek (via Marvel Comics) · from Thanatos, 'death'
Thanos is named after the Marvel Comics supervillain Thanos, whose own name derives from the Greek Thanatos, the personification of death. The authors chose the name because the fossil was found in Brazil's Bauru Group, and the character's name was a playful nod to popular culture. The type species, Thanos simpsonorum, honours the animated TV family The Simpsons.
