- Mongolo- · Latinised place name · of Mongolia, where the fossils were found
- stegos · Greek · roof
The name combines Mongolia, where the fossils were found, with the Greek "stegos", meaning "roof". "Roof" is the traditional root used for stegosaurs, because early researchers thought their back plates lay flat like roof tiles. The name therefore means "Mongolian roof".
