Stegosaurides

steg-oh-SORE-ih-deez /ˌstɛɡoʊˈsɔːrɪdiːz/

Nomen dubium

Stegosaurus-like form

  • Stegosaurus · Greek · roofed lizard (the genus Stegosaurus)
  • -ides · Greek · resembling, having the form of

The name combines the well-known genus name Stegosaurus with the Greek suffix -ides, meaning "resembling" or "having the form of." It was applied to indicate that the animal was similar to, or related to, Stegosaurus. The name thus means something like "Stegosaurus-like" or "resembling a Stegosaurus."

Stegosaurides is generally regarded as a nomen dubium. It was named by Bohlin in 1953 on the basis of fragmentary material from the Early Cretaceous of China. The remains are too incomplete to allow confident diagnosis, and it is not reliably assignable to any stegosaurid family. It is a dinosaur — specifically a thyreophoran (stegosaur), or at least a putative one.
