- Tangvay · Lao (place name) · Tang Vay, a village near the fossil site in Laos
- sauros · Greek · lizard
Tangvayosaurus is named after Tang Vay, the village near the site in Laos where the fossils were found, combined with the Greek word for lizard. The name therefore means "Tang Vay lizard". It is a sauropod, a long-necked plant-eating dinosaur, described from partial skeletons. The type species, T. hoffeti, honours the geologist Jean-Michel Hoffet.
