Stormbergia
storm-BER-jee-uh /stɔrmˈbɛrdʒiə/
Nomen nudum
Stormberg (Group) + Greek "-ia", a place-name ending
- Stormberg · Afrikaans/Dutch · storm mountain, the Stormberg Group of southern Africa
- -ia · Latin · suffix for a place or region
The name refers to the Stormberg Group, the sequence of rock layers in southern Africa that includes the Elliot Formation, where the fossils were found. It was coined for a small early ornithischian dinosaur, closely related to Lesothosaurus, from the Early Jurassic of South Africa.
- Period
- Early Jurassic
- Found in
- Upper Elliot Formation, South Africa and Lesotho
Stormbergia dangershoeki is, as far as I recall, a nomen nudum. It comes from unpublished work by Richard Butler, and the name was never validly published. I'm not fully certain of this status, the author, or the year, so I've left those fields blank. The animal is a basal ornithischian, not a theropod or sauropod.
