Chirostenotes

kye-roh-STEN-oh-teez /ˌkaɪroʊˈstɛnoʊtiːz/

Accepted genus

narrow hand (or "narrow-handed one")

  • cheir (chiro-) · Greek · hand
  • stenos · Greek · narrow
  • -otes · Greek · agent suffix, 'one characterized by'

The name combines Greek roots for "hand" and "narrow". Gilmore chose it because the first fossils known were slender hands with long, narrow fingers and claws. The name refers to that delicate hand structure.
