Alectrosaurus

ah-LEK-troh-SORE-us /əˌlɛktroʊˈsɔːrəs/

Accepted genus

unmarried lizard

  • alektros · Greek · unmarried, without a mate
  • sauros · Greek · lizard

The name combines the Greek "alektros" (unmarried or without a mate) with "sauros" (lizard). Gilmore chose it because the animal's relationships to other known dinosaurs were unclear when it was described, so it seemed to have no known "mate" or close relative. It is a long-legged tyrannosauroid theropod.
