Barsboldia
barz-BOLD-ee-ah /ˌbɑrzˈboʊldiə/
Accepted genus
Barsbold's (animal)
- Barsbold · Mongolian (personal name) · Rinchen Barsbold, Mongolian paleontologist
- -ia · Latin · Latinised suffix used for genus names
Barsboldia honours Rinchen Barsbold, the Mongolian paleontologist who led and took part in many Polish-Mongolian fossil expeditions to the Gobi Desert and made major contributions to the study of Mongolian dinosaurs. The name is his surname plus the Latinised ending "-ia", so it is a person-based name rather than a descriptive one. The only named species is Barsboldia sicinskii. It is a hadrosaurid ("duck-billed dinosaur") known from a partial skeleton with unusually tall neural spines on the back and tail vertebrae.
