Bihariosaurus

bih-HAR-ee-oh-SORE-us /bɪˌhærɪoʊˈsɔːrəs/

Nomen dubium

Bihar lizard

  • Bihari · Romanian/Latin · of or relating to Bihar (Bihor), a region in Romania
  • saurus · Greek · lizard

The name combines "Bihari" (or "Bihor"), referring to the Bihor (Bihar) region of northwestern Romania (Transylvania), with the Greek word "sauros" meaning lizard. The fossils were discovered in that part of Romania, which was historically known by the Hungarian name "Bihar." The name was thus chosen to honour the geographic origin of the specimen.

Bihariosaurus bauxiticus was named by Marinescu in 1989 on the basis of fragmentary material (vertebrae and limb fragments) from the Late Cretaceous of the Bihor region, Romania. It is widely regarded as a nomen dubium because the material is too incomplete to confidently diagnose a distinct genus; it is thought to represent a rhabdodontid ornithopod dinosaur, possibly related to Rhabdodon.
