Alioramus
AL-ee-oh-RAY-mus /ˌæliəˈreɪməs/
Accepted genus
other branch
- alius · Latin · other, different
- ramus · Latin · branch
Alioramus comes from the Latin "alius" (other) and "ramus" (branch). Sergei Kurzanov chose the name in 1976 because this tyrannosaur seemed to belong to a different branch of the theropod family tree from the other large carnivorous dinosaurs known at the time. It is a tyrannosaurid with a long, low snout and a row of small bumps along the top of the snout.
