VEH-teh-roo-PRIS-tee-SORE-us /ˌvɛtɛruːˌprɪstiˈsɔːrəs/
Accepted genus
old shark lizard
- vetus (veteru-) · Latin · old
- pristis · Greek · shark (literally sawfish or shark)
- sauros · Greek · lizard
The name combines Latin "vetus" (old) with Greek "pristis" (shark) and "sauros" (lizard), giving "old shark lizard". "Shark" refers to the blade-like, shark-tooth-like teeth typical of carcharodontosaurid theropods. "Old" points to its early geological age compared with other members of that group. The type species is V. milneri.
