Tsintaosaurus
TSING-dow-SORE-us /ˌtsɪŋdaʊˈsɔːrəs/
Accepted genus
Tsingtao lizard
- Tsintao · Chinese (Wade-Giles romanisation) · Qingdao (Tsingtao), the city in Shandong, China
- sauros · Greek · lizard
The name means "Tsingtao lizard". It refers to the city of Tsingtao (Qingdao) in Shandong Province, China, near where the fossils were found. Tsintaosaurus is known for the odd, spike-like crest once reconstructed on top of its skull. That crest is now thought to be a displaced piece of the facial bones (nasal/premaxilla).
