Overoraptor
OH-vair-oh-RAP-tor /ˌoʊvɛroʊˈræptər/
Accepted genus
piebald plunderer
- overo · Spanish · piebald, patchy-coated (as of a horse)
- raptor · Latin · plunderer, robber
The name combines the Spanish word "overo", used for a piebald or patchy-coated horse, with the Latin "raptor", meaning plunderer or robber. "Overo" alludes to the animal's mosaic of features, which mix traits seen in different groups of paravian dinosaurs. The type species, O. chimentoi, honours Nestor Chimento, who was connected with the discovery.
