Nanyangosaurus
nan-YANG-oh-SORE-us /nænˌjæŋoʊˈsɔːrəs/
Accepted genus
Nanyang lizard
- Nanyang · Chinese (place name) · the Nanyang Basin / Nanyang city area in Henan, China, where the fossils were found
- sauros · Greek · lizard
The name combines Nanyang, the basin in Henan Province, China, where the fossil was discovered, with the Greek "sauros" meaning lizard. It therefore simply means "lizard from Nanyang". The type species, N. zhugeii, honours the Chinese historical figure Zhuge Liang, who is associated with the Nanyang area.
