- Miera · Spanish (surname) · after Bernardo de Miera y Pacheco, 18th-century cartographer
- sauros · Greek · lizard
Mierasaurus was named in honour of Bernardo de Miera y Pacheco, a Spanish cartographer who mapped parts of the American Southwest, including Utah, during the 1776 Domínguez–Escalante expedition. The second part is the Greek word for "lizard", the usual ending for dinosaur names. The only known species, M. bobyoungi, honours Bob Young.
