Maleevosaurus honours the Russian paleontologist Evgeny Maleev, who described many Mongolian dinosaurs, including the specimen on which the genus is based. Carpenter coined the name in 1992 as a new genus for the species Maleev had called Gorgosaurus novojilovi in 1955. The name pairs Maleev's surname with the Greek word for lizard.
