Maleevus

mah-LEE-vus /məˈliːvəs/

Nomen dubium

Maleev's one (honoring Evgeny Maleev)

  • Maleev · Latin (Latinized surname) · referring to Soviet paleontologist Evgeny Alexandrovich Maleev
  • -us · Latin · standard Latin masculine suffix

Maleevus is named in honour of the Soviet/Russian palaeontologist Evgeny Alexandrovich Maleev (1915–1966), who made significant contributions to the study of Asian theropod dinosaurs, including early work on ankylosaurs and tyrannosaurids from Mongolia. The name was coined by Tumanova in 1987 as a tribute to his legacy. The Latinized ending -us is the standard masculine nominative suffix applied to Latinized personal names in zoological nomenclature.

Maleevus is an ankylosaur (ankylosaurid) known from very fragmentary remains. It is widely considered a nomen dubium because the holotype material is too incomplete to reliably diagnose the genus or distinguish it from other ankylosaurs of the region. It should not be confused with Maleevosaurus, a separate (also dubious) name applied to a tyrannosaur by Maleev himself.
