Marshosaurus
MARSH-oh-SORE-us /ˌmɑːrʃoʊˈsɔːrəs/
Accepted genus
Marsh's lizard
- Marsh · English (personal name) · Othniel Charles Marsh, American paleontologist
- sauros · Greek · lizard
The name honours Othniel Charles Marsh, the 19th-century Yale paleontologist who described many famous North American dinosaurs from the Morrison Formation, combined with the Greek word for lizard. It was named for Marsh because the fossils come from the same Late Jurassic rocks where he did much of his pioneering work. The type species, M. bicentesimus, refers to the 200th anniversary of the United States, as it was named in 1976.
