Gryposaurus
GRIP-oh-SORE-us /ˌɡrɪpoʊˈsɔːrəs/
Accepted genus
hooked-nosed lizard
- gryphos / grypos · Greek · hooked, curved
- sauros · Greek · lizard
The name combines the Greek "grypos" (hooked or curved) with "sauros" (lizard). It refers to the strongly arched, hooked profile of the snout, which gives this duck-billed hadrosaur a distinctive "Roman nose". The genus was named by Lawrence Lambe in 1914 for the species Gryposaurus notabilis, originally described from Alberta, Canada.
