Futalognkosaurus
foo-tah-LONG-koh-SORE-us /ˌfuːtɑˌlɒŋkoʊˈsɔːrəs/
Accepted genus
giant chief lizard
- futa · Mapudungun · giant
- lognko · Mapudungun · chief
- sauros · Greek · lizard
The name combines the Mapuche (Mapudungun) words "futa" (giant) and "lognko" (chief) with the Greek "sauros" (lizard), giving "giant chief lizard". It was chosen to reflect the enormous size of this titanosaur, one of the largest known dinosaurs from Patagonia. The Mapuche are the Indigenous people of the region where it was found.
