Diamantinasaurus is named after the Diamantina River region of central-western Queensland, Australia, where the first fossils were found. The river itself was named after Diamantina Bowen, wife of Queensland's first governor. The Greek suffix "sauros" means lizard, so the name means "Diamantina lizard". The type species is D. matildae, named for "Matilda", the Waltzing Matilda connection to the area.
