Doryphorosaurus
DOR-ih-FOR-oh-SORE-us /ˌdɒrɪˌfɒroʊˈsɔːrəs/
Synonym of Kentrosaurus
spear-bearer lizard
- doryphoros · Greek · spear-bearer
- sauros · Greek · lizard
The name combines the Greek "doryphoros" (spear-bearer) with "sauros" (lizard), referring to the spikes along the back and tail of the stegosaur. It was proposed by Nopcsa as a replacement name for Kentrosaurus, which he believed was preoccupied. That concern proved unnecessary, so Kentrosaurus remains the valid name.
