Accepted genus
Charon's lizard
- Charon · Greek (mythology) · the ferryman of the underworld
- sauros · Greek · lizard
The name combines Charon, the ferryman of the dead in Greek mythology who carried souls across the river Styx, with the Greek word for lizard. It was chosen in reference to the Amur River, called Heilongjiang ("Black Dragon River") in Chinese, on whose banks the fossils were found. The species name jiayinensis refers to Jiayin County, where the fossils were discovered.
