Acristavus
ah-KRIS-tah-vus /əˌkrɪstəvəs/
Accepted genus
crestless grandfather
- a · Greek/Latin · without
- crista · Latin · crest
- avus · Latin · grandfather, ancestor
The name means "crestless grandfather". It combines the Latin "a" (without), "crista" (crest) and "avus" (grandfather or ancestor). It was chosen because this hadrosaur lacked the bony crest or solid nasal hump of its close relatives, and it sits near the base of the brachylophosaurin lineage.
